Macquarie Island 2003

Re-supply and Winter Changeover. [pg1, pg2,]

After the hectic pace for the re-supply, the time finally comes for the official handover ceremony and our last farewells. By this time the station is re-stocked with everything it may need for the following year, we have all been pumped with information on where everything is and how things are done, the summer and round trip scientists have all completed (hopefully) their tasks.Things are now ready to roll for the next 12 months or so.

The handover ceremony is a short but sweet affair where the previous person from the various roles on station "officially" hands over the responsibility for that role, with a handshake and sometimes some unusual but relevant gifts. After the ceremony the outgoing expeditioners are whisked of to the ship by IRB and then we wave them goodbye as the ship gives one long blast of it's fog horn and she slowly slips away into the horizon. It then hits you, slowly but surely, like a brick, we are now a total of 14 people completely isolated on this tiny island in the middle of the Southern Ocean for the next 12 months.!
